This bill seeks to amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act , which governs the Medicare program, to broaden the scope of healthcare providers authorized to document the need for diabetic shoes. Currently, only physicians are permitted to fulfill the documentation requirement for Medicare coverage of certain shoes for individuals with diabetes. The proposed legislation would specifically allow nurse practitioners and physician assistants to also satisfy this documentation requirement. This change aims to enhance access to essential diabetic footwear by enabling more qualified healthcare professionals to authorize these supplies under Medicare.
Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on Ways and Means, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
