This bill establishes an Office of Inspector General within the Executive Office of the President , mandating the President to appoint an Inspector General for this office within 90 days of the Act's enactment. This new Inspector General will be responsible for conducting audits and investigations to promote efficiency and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse within the Executive Office. Furthermore, the legislation significantly alters the removal standards for most Inspectors General. It specifies that Presidentially-appointed Inspectors General and those for designated federal entities can only be removed for inefficiency, malfeasance of office, or neglect of duty , thereby enhancing their independence. However, this stricter removal standard does not extend to Inspectors General of explicitly defined "independent agencies," which retain existing removal provisions.
