The "Storing All Firearms Effectively and Safely Act" (SAFES Act) introduces a new **refundable tax credit** designed to encourage the purchase of gun safes. This credit would cover **90% of the cost** of a new gun safe, up to a maximum of **$500 for individuals** or **$1,000 for joint filers**, aiming to make secure firearm storage more accessible. A qualifying gun safe must be a new device specifically designed to prevent unauthorized access to firearms or ammunition, secured by a combination, key, or biometric lock. While any qualifying new gun safe is eligible for the credit before January 1, 2031, purchases made after this date will be limited to types of gun safes that the Secretary of Health and Human Services has publicly identified as "**highly effective in preventing unauthorized access**." To support this future eligibility, the Secretary of Health and Human Services is mandated to publish a report within five years of the Act's enactment, detailing these highly effective gun safe types. Importantly, taxpayers claiming the credit will not be required to disclose information about their firearm ownership. The credit will apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2025.
