The "Smoke Exposure Research Act" directs the Secretary of Agriculture, through the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) , to undertake comprehensive research into the impact of wildfire smoke exposure on wine grapes. This research aims to identify the specific compounds responsible for smoke taint and to establish standardized methodologies for sampling and testing smoke-exposed grapes and wines, including rapid screening methods. Furthermore, the ARS will be required to create a reliable database of naturally occurring smoke taint compounds and to develop effective risk assessment tools or mitigation methods to reduce or eliminate smoke taint in wine production. The bill also mandates studying compounds that can act as a barrier against smoke compounds and requires coordination with relevant land-grant colleges and universities in California, Oregon, and Washington. To support these critical research initiatives, the bill authorizes an appropriation of $6,500,000 for each of fiscal years 2026 through 2030 .
