This bill, titled the "Transportation Assistance for Olympic and World Cup Cities Act of 2025," aims to support State, Tribal, and local efforts in addressing transportation challenges associated with hosting major international sporting events in the United States. It establishes a new program within title 49, United States Code, to provide financial and technical assistance. The legislation authorizes an annual appropriation of $50,000,000 for grants to eligible entities. These grants are specifically for events such as the Olympic, Paralympic, Special Olympics, and FIFA Men's and Women's World Cup events held within the U.S. Funds are allocated to host metropolitan planning organizations , which then distribute them to eligible entities like States, Indian Tribes, local governments, and certain nonprofit organizations. The funding supports transportation projects and planning activities that facilitate the movement of people and goods, provided they are located within 100 miles of the event and are not temporary infrastructure. Assistance is available from five years before an event until 30 days after its conclusion. Beyond financial aid, the bill directs the Secretary of Transportation to offer technical and planning assistance to eligible entities. This includes help with intermodal transportation plans, facilitating bus and equipment sharing, and expediting review processes for event-related submissions. Furthermore, the legislation mandates that the Department of Commerce conduct studies on the economic impact of hosting the 2028 Olympics and the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup on the U.S. travel and tourism industry . These studies will analyze changes in international and domestic travel, business revenues, and employment rates, with reports to be made publicly available after each event.
