This legislation mandates the Secretary of Health and Human Services , acting through the Commissioner of Food and Drugs , to undertake a comprehensive study concerning the human health effects of exposure to microplastics found in food and water. The study is specifically tasked with identifying the primary pathways through which humans are exposed to microplastics. It must also thoroughly investigate the impact of such exposure on critical health areas, including children's health , the endocrine system , cancer , chronic illness , and reproductive health . Furthermore, the Secretary has the discretion to include other important areas of inquiry as deemed appropriate for a complete assessment. Within one year of the bill's enactment, the Secretary is required to submit a detailed report to Congress. This report will not only describe the findings and conclusions derived from the study but also provide specific recommendations for potential legislative or administrative actions necessary to address the identified human health impacts of microplastic exposure.
