The "Bringing Real Accountability Via Enforcement in Burma Act," or "BRAVE Burma Act," aims to strengthen and extend United States policy regarding Burma. A key provision extends the sunset clause of the Burma Unified through Rigorous Military Accountability Act of 2022 from eight to ten years, ensuring its provisions remain active for a longer period. The bill also mandates that the President, within 180 days and annually thereafter for seven years, determine whether specific Burmese entities meet sanctions criteria . These entities include certain state-owned enterprises, the Myanma Economic Bank, and any foreign person operating in the jet fuel sector of the Burmese economy. Upon making these determinations, the President must submit a report to Congress detailing the assessment. Additionally, the legislation directs the Secretary of the Treasury to instruct the U.S. Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund to limit any increase in Burma's shareholding if the country is governed by the State Security and Peace Commission. This measure can be waived by the President if deemed important to U.S. national interest. Crucially, the Act requires the Secretary of State to appoint a Special Envoy for Burma , holding ambassadorial rank, to coordinate all aspects of U.S. policy. This Envoy will be responsible for developing a comprehensive strategy to promote the restoration of peace and a civilian-led democratic government, coordinating U.S. and multilateral sanctions, and engaging with international partners and Burmese civil society to achieve these goals.
